Fourteen members of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club experienced a fantastic weekend of competition at the National Surf Life Saving Masters Championships at Gyllingvase beach, Falmouth on the 7/8 August finishing in 3rd place overall and top Cornish Club out of the 20 Surf Life Saving Clubs taking part from across the Country. As expected there was no surf but this did not distract from the competition, instead the focus was on stamina, strength and craft skills and many of the events were very exciting to watch as competitors pushed themselves to their limits to achieve that National title in individual and team events.
Team Manager, Alan Roberts, said “We have had an incredible weekend, thank you to Surf Life Saving GB for a very well run event and to all the officials who helped out over the 2 day competition. Our 14 member team gave their all to achieve this amazing result with some outstanding individual and team performances. We were all a little jaded on Saturday morning as we had competed in the Cornish Regional Championships at Portreath the previous weekend, retaining our Masters Cornish Champs title at that event. However, with the sun shining and the medals and points beginning to accumulate as the morning wore on we were soon in full swing.
After the first days individual events we were lying in 3rd place overall with Portreath SLSC hot on our heels. Sunday’s events mainly consisted of paired and team events and we were all determined to try and retain our 3rd place, our team did not disappoint and after the medal presentation ceremony there were a few nail biting moments while we listened to the final overall results to be announced. Very well done to North Devon Clubs, Saunton Sands and Woolacombe for finishing in 1st and 2nd place respectively, we were 3rd , with Portreath in 4th.
