Our Youth Team Put in Great Display at National Youth Pool Surf Lifesaving Champs (report from Gaynor Symons, Team Manager)
A team of 11 juniors and 5 seniors from Hayle Surf Lifesaving Club took part in the Youth Great Britain Life Saving Pool Championships held on Sunday 22nd April at Cardiff International Pool.
The competitors arrived bright and early for a long day of racing and a quick team photo was taken with ever youthful coach James Burlingham looking like another team member.
The line up consisted of 3 boys and 13 girls which unfortunately meant we were unable to enter any of the boys relays. Vicky, Brittany, Daire, Abbe, Nicky and Amy all swam up an age group in the girls relays to make up the teams. Jenna Smitham and Morva Hughes after swimming a full day in their last Nipper pool champs on the Saturday put in some superb performances both scoring points in the manikin carry and making up a team to be watched in the relays with Kathryn Onley and Isla Symons.
As the day unfolded and the Super Lifesaver races went on and on it became obvious that all the events would not be accommodated before 6.00pm so a decision was made to cancel the 100m rescue medley. This was much to the disappointment of Tegen Hughes as it is her favourite event and the event is also a real crowd pleaser. Later the U13 manikin tow with fins and all the rescue medleys were cancelled.
The end of a long hot day was then something of an anticlimax that will need to be addressed for next year.
The standard of competition was as always very high and I would like to say how proud I am of our young team who gave everything they had with Emily, Tom, Daire and Tegen also having taken part in the Senior Champs at the same venue the previous weekend.
We finished in a creditable 8th place, only a few points shy of 7th (2nd amongst the Cornish clubs) out of the 21 clubs taking part and came home with 5 bronze medals.
I would like to say a big thank you to Gerard Hughes & Ruth Smaldon for timekeeping and James Burlingham & Dan Latham for handling & coaching. Also thanks to the parents for transporting your children to this event and supporting to help make up ‘Team HAYLE.’
The standard is always very high and to even to get points is a great achievement, so to bring home a medal is a fantastic achievement.
Very well done to everyone who took part and those that helped, supported and trained the Team.
