Surf Life Saving GB hosted the British National Inshore Rescue Boats (IRB) Championships and the IRB European Championships at Bournemouth on the weekend of 25/26 September 2010 as part of their last Surf Life Festival of the year. Sixteen members of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club competed in both Competitions and were delighted to come away with 1st place in the men’s category and 3rd place overall in the British Championships and 3rd place in the men’s category and 4th place overall in the European Championships, winning 1 gold and 2 bronze medals in the British Champs and 1 bronze medal in the Europeans.
Both Championships were hotly contested with the four events of Single Rescue, Mass Rescue, Tube Rescue and Teams Rescue broken down into heats, semi finals and finals. The skills of the IRB drivers, crews and patients were certainly put to the test and all the races made good spectator viewing.
Team Manager and competitor, Alan Roberts, said “Every year this event gets more competitive and we were delighted to come away with 1st place for the men (women are allowed to make up the men’s teams) in the British Championships. Again unfortunately we didn’t have a women’s team to add to the overall points total but this is something we aim to work on over the next year. All our team performed outstandingly over the two day competition with some nail biting races and very skilled handling of the boats and patients. Six of our team are still Junior members of the club, some of them newly qualified as crewmen this year and they all did an incredible job doing everything asked of them. It is quite a terrifying experience to be a patient and have an IRB approaching you at speed and then be lifted out of the water and into the boat while it is still moving so quickly!”
