Fourteen young members from the Nipper, Junior and Senior sections of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club took the first step towards becoming professional Beach Lifeguards when they obtained their Surf Life Saving GB Bronze Lifesaving Award on Sunday 18 March.  The award (minimum age 11) turns competent swimmers into potential Life Savers and covers a knowledge of water safety, rescue procedures and being sun smart on the beach, practical demonstrations of resuscitation and first aid and a demonstration of survival skills and rescue techniques in the water.

Course Assessor, Steve Penberthy, said “I was very impressed with the competency and keenness of all the candidates, they passed the award with flying colours and are now eager to move on to the Silver Award.  The award can be taken in a swimming pool but everyone was happy to go through their paces in the sea despite the cold and messy conditions and I am sure that they will all make excellent Lifeguards in the future.”
