Twelve members of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club spent part of their Bank holiday weekend being assessed for their Surf Life Saving GB (SLSGB) Beach Lifeguard Award which culminated a five week training course instructed by volunteers Dave Parker, Pez Perry and trainee Instructor Jamie Smith and funded by Integer Training Ltd. The all day assessment which involved Rescue Board and Torpedo sea rescues of unconscious patients, a timed beach run, spinal carries, a full knowledge of the Beach Lifeguard manual and demonstration of adult, child and baby resuscitation techniques, assessment of a casualty and how to manage a choking patient resulted in eleven of the candidates obtaining the SLSGB Beach Lifeguard qualification and one candidate obtaining the SLSGB Surf Coach Award.

Instructor, Dave Parker, said “A great result with most of the candidates obtaining the qualification for the first time, a number of whom have been with us since they joined the Club as either Nippers or Juniors. There is a great deal to learn on this course and all of them worked hard to master all the different aspects from rescues to first aid and resuscitation and an in depth knowledge of the beach and sea environment. This is an internationally recognised Professional Award which lasts for 2 years and some of the candidates will be working for the RNLI on our local beaches this summer as Lifeguards.

Some of the manikins and torpedoes we used on the course and during the assessment were purchased from a grant we obtained from the Co-Operative Community Fund so I would like to thank them on behalf of the Club for the money we received. Thank you also to the three Assessors who gave up their day for us, they were Astrid Selley, Jock Paton and Gil Tredinnick.

For information about future courses please contact me on 01736 755303 or make an enquiry through the contact page of our website at www.hayleslsc.org.uk”
