Monday (4 July 2011) evening’s spring tide saw the first running of the ‘Surf to Salt’ Paddleboard Race organised by Hayle Surf Lifesaving Club. The 3km course took competitors from the beach in front of the lifesaving club HQ at the bluff out around the estuary marker buoys and back up the river, through the harbour to the finish line beneath the viaduct. The event was open to all board paddlers and on the night we had a 47 strong start line comprising surf life saving competitors, stand up paddle boarders and even local legend Chris Ryan on an old windsurf board minus the sail! Amid the line up were Great Britain team paddler George Haynes, reigning European champion David Green, current World masters champion Dave Parker and Australian Surf Life Saving finalist Jayden Jensen. Conditions were excellent and the kind weather enabled spectators to witness the highly competitive closing stages of the race along Penpol Creek. Competitors and spectators alike enjoyed post race banter and welcome refreshment in the Salt Bar where the presentation and prize giving took place.

Race organiser, Ben Holtaway, said “We are very pleased with the event, everyone had a great race and it was fantastic to see such a close finish between the big international surf lifesavers. The younger paddlers especially should all be very proud of themselves; there were some outstanding performances out there this evening. A big thank you to all our sponsors and special thanks to Hayle Harbour Co. who allowed us to hold the race and opened up the quayside car park for our use throughout the evening. The race was fully subscribed with ages ranging from 13 to 50+. We are now hoping to make this an annual event as it was such a success so get your entries in early for next year!”
