Surf Life Saving Club members from around Cornwall, joined together for a Inshore Rescue Boat Taster Day, last Saturday.
The IRB is a small inflatable craft 3.88m long with a 30 HP engine, it has been specially designed to operate within the heavy surf zone. some of the modifications added to it are a protected propeller, foot straps on the floor and a flexible fuel tank to name a few. With its size, agility and speed, it handles most swells thrown at it, making it a excellent craft for getting to swimmers in difficulties.
Polzeath, Newquay, Perranporth and Hayle all had members on this course which was a basic introduction to the IRB, in the morning we covered the Design and modifications of the IRB, stripping it down and rebuilding it again. after a quick pasty for lunch, it was time to get wet.
We had four IRBs in the water, and had a quick turn around with the crew to stop them getting cold, we covered Launching and recovery, Driving in surf, Engine failure, How to get a casualty in to the IRB and solo driving.
We will be having more courses through the year, for more information check our web site Hayleslsc.org.uk or contact Dave Parker 07967213204
